How to know your Internet Download speed

Saturday, December 08, 2012
With the ever-rising hunger for bandwidth, netizens these days have become awfully particular about their Internet speed especially their download speed.
Most of us aware of speedtest sites like , speedtest.net , bandwidthplace.com & many more. But the question is do they give correct results.Well, we put it on the benefit of doubt due to a number of reasons that are explained herewith : -

1. Since they test your connection by downloading/uploading a very small amount of data for a very limited period of time, the Bandwidth of your connection may not be properly assessed.

2. They show the download speed in Mbps (Megabits per second) or Kbps (Kilobits per second)  while almost all download managers show a download in progress in KBps (Kilobytes per second).
Here one should remember 1 KBps = 8Kbps.

A healthy alternative is to use some online tools that use test files to let you know your download speed. All you need to do is run the test download for a minute or two observe the download transfer rate, that should stabilize by that time.Cancel the download when you are done.

Here are some sites that provide these tests : -

2. Hosthop.com
3. Hostdime.in
