In this world of ever bulging size of web pages, it's been difficult for limited quota internet users to keep themselves within limits.Also most people these days are crazy about their net speeds.
   To avoid such issues it is advisable to keep a nifty, free Bandwidth & Usage monitoring software tool installed on your PC.


1.  Netmeter :  Type : Freeware | Filesize : 290KB(executable), 0.6MB (installation version) | It comes both as a directly executable and installation version.As shown on right its graph shows real time Upload download usage.Right click the graph will give a host of options to get Daily, Weekly, Monthly and even Estimated Usage.






2. Networx :  Type: Freeware | Filesize : 3 MB | Supported Platforms : Win XP, Win 7 , Vista, Windows 2000, 2003,2008 (32 & 64 bit) |
It will run at start up after installation & will be located in the system tray at the bottom right corner of your screen.Besides having real-time graphical displays it plays out on some useful features : -

  • Efficient report generation & export to various formats (MS Word, Excel, HTML)
  • Option to notify user & disconnect internet if usage exceeds.
  • Network diagnostic tools like ping, trace route are integrated
  • Speedmeter utility can test connection speed in real time.

3. tbbMeter : Type: Freeware | Filesize : 6MB | Supported Platforms : Windows (All) | Special Requirement : Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 | Some of its features are : 
  • Daily, Weekly, Monthly Usage reports.
  • Real time data usage (Upload/Download) in graphical form
  • Provision to set alarms to prevent excess monthly usage or beyond Fair Usage.
  • Predefined alarm profiles.
  • Background diagnostics for measuring Broadband Performance.
  • Protocol-wise performance analysis ( e.g., P2P, VoIP,etc.)

4. Bitmeter : Type: Freeware | Supported Platforms :Windows  | Special Requirement : Microsoft . NET Framework | Filesize : 1.4 MB; 
A very intutive & graphical user interface with a host of features apart from Usage and reports features : -
  • Remote monitoring on a web interface
  • Speed alerts, Usage alerts and ISP restrictions.
  • Manual & automatic back-up of Configuration & traffic history.
  • Handy calculator to chalk out expected time to complete a download in real-time network conditions.

Well, these are few that are free but feature-rich.There are many that are good but not free.
